Calaveras Hills High School

Returning from the Winter Break amid rising COVID-19 case rates throughout our community, has come with immediate challenges. However, many were not unforeseen heading into a holiday break with Omicron’s visibility and the expectation of travel and gatherings.

As you are all well aware, we have had an exorbitant number of positive student and staff cases, resulting in an even higher number of students and staff placed in quarantine. We have had 167 substitute teacher positions unfilled, requiring us to cover classes with other teachers, principals, district office staff, as well as grouping classes together with one teacher. In addition, we had 107 support staff positions unfilled this week. While we are diligently recruiting substitutes, we are not able to fill the shortage. Given the number of cases, the possibility of being in close contact with a positive case has increased.

Heading into this weekend and the coming week (coupled with the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday on Monday, January 17), ALL MUSD SCHOOLS WILL BE PLACED ON A 10-DAY, DISTRICT-WIDE QUARANTINE. During this time (January 8-17), we expect our families to not travel, not attend large gatherings, and practice Safety First risk mitigation measures in and around your homes so we can safely return to In-Person Learning on TUESDAY, JANUARY 18. Please know this was not an easy decision to make, but one that must be done.

SCHOOLS WILL REMAIN OPEN TO VIRTUAL LEARNING FROM MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY, JANUARY 10-13 NEXT WEEK and follow the same bell schedule as if the students were in their physical classrooms. Our students will be expected to be online for class from start to finish. (Note: This is different from last school year.) Additionally, for families without adequate Wifi or child supervision during the school day, they will be on the physical campus in accordance with AB130. All personnel are expected to be on campus in their same role on Monday, January 10.

This will require that those parents who wish to participate virtually will need to sign Independent Study Contracts. Principals will provide additional information to make that happen. In order for us to implement MUSD EducatEveryWhere Virtual Learning, parents are being provided the opportunity to sign Independent Study contracts; if they don’t wish to do so, their child will be in person.

This plan only works if everyone does their part, and we have every bit of confidence in our MUSD team and families. Through discussions with our Milpitas Teachers Association (MTA), California School Employees Association (CSEA), Milpitas Management Association (MMA) and the Board of Education, we know this is necessary so we can all return to a safe school environment on Tuesday, January 18.

Process for K-11 Students to Request to Repeat the 2020-2021 Grade AB | 104 Bill Information

This law provides a process for parents and guardians to request that their student repeat the grade they were enrolled in during the 2020-2021 school year. Parents and guardians of students who were in grades Kindergarten – 11 in the last school year would be eligible to make this request if their student received a D, F, or No Pass grade for at least one-half of their coursework in the 2020-2021 school year. This request would trigger a personalized consultation with representatives of the district to review and discuss all learning recovery options and supports that the student could access.

How to apply: Parents/Guardians may submit a written request through the Milpitas Unified School District Learning and Development Office by completing this form (Español / Tiếng Việt). The district will schedule a consultation within 30 days of submitting the form.

Exemption for 2020-2021 Juniors and Seniors of District Graduation Requirements | AB 104 Bill Information

The law requires that high school students who were in their third or fourth year of high school during the 2020-2021 school year, and who were not on track to graduate in four years, may be exempt from our district’s graduation requirements that exceed statewide requirements. It also requires high schools to provide credit recovery support for these students, including the option to retake courses, or to enroll in a fifth year of high school, to complete state graduation requirements.

Milpitas Unified School District will contact students eligible for this exemption.
